The Fulham versus Swansea football game played on 23 November 2013 had all the ingredients of a classic British Netherlands event with both goalkeepers from the Netherlands and the Fulham manager, Martin Jol, a Dutchman. Sadly despite a spirited effort by the Fulham side, they were outplayed by a more skilful and well-organised Swansea side on a cold but clear afternoon at Craven Cottage. This did not stop the NBCC members and their guests from having a most enjoyable afternoon. We were graced with the presence of the Deputy Ambassador and Economic Attaché as well as members from KLM, Rabobank, ABN Amro and friends. Following a warming meal and wine in the warm interior of the box, we settled down in the stand with rugs to watch the game. Being in a box does have the advantage of warm drinks at half time and all conveniences close by.
Despite a fine curling goal from Scott Parker, an ex-England player, it was not enough with poor defence leading to an own goal by Fulham and a fine strike by the former under 21 Liverpool player, Jonjo Shelvey sealed the win for Swansea.
It was a most enjoyable and well-organised event.
